Alfred was born in Seend, Wiltshire. He was the son of William James Brown and Leah Brown nee Rogers, and the brother of Albert Brown, Arthur Brown, Edith Brown, Ernest Brown, Lucy Brown, Mary Brown, Oliver Brown and Walter Henry Brown.
