John Pullan (sometimes spelt Pulleyne) was a sixteenth century Protestant preacher. He was a Yorkshireman and an Oxford Graduate, and after becoming a clergyman he began preaching vehemently against Catholicism and Queen Mary.
If you're unaware of the historical context of this then the following should briefly explain:
The English Reformation had begun in the first half of the sixteenth century under Henry VIII. They decided that the church shouldn't be Catholic anymore (mainly because Henry wanted as much power over it as possible and the Pope wouldn't let him have it) so they made it Protestant.
When he died, Edward VI made it even more Protestant and quite a few people were converted.
When Mary came to the throne she changed the church back to Catholicism. So, John Pullan being a Protestant and saying nasty things about the Catholics didn't go down too well. In fact, they went down so badly that some vicious bishops were sent out looking for him and was forced to flee to Geneva in 1557. Whilst there, he helped a group of Genevan Protestants to construct the Genevan Versification of Psalms.
