what's.in.a.name

This page is here to help find out where our name comes from. If you know anything, tell me and I'll update it....

Item One:
Amanda writes (2002):

"I found a reference to Pullen but this time it was in fictional literature and it wasn't referring to a person. I found it in Sir Thomas More's 'Utopia' and he mentioned Pullen when he was discussing chickens running around a garden or something. In fact, Pullen appears to have been an old English word for chicken or more specifically, poultry."

Item Two:
Roland writes (30/09/02):

"When my wife, Dianne, was in hospital in Glasgow a few years ago a lady came up to her and introduced herself as Mrs McPullen. She wanted to know if Dianne was Scottish and related. I have not attempted to find out our tartan but it does seem unwise to castigate the Scots."

Item Three:
Ivan writes (2002):

"We are pretty sure that the name Pullen comes from some French historical connection meaning Horse dealer or handler, much as it pains me to admit a French connection!"
